Your Vehicle on Ft Hood

Post by Pope » Tue Aug 13, 2013 8:58 am

Personally Owned Vehicle (POV) access to Ft Hood for Operation Bulldog should be through North Gate in Gatesville, TX. I will post specific directions soon.

Going through North Gate - you will not pass through a check-in point for Range Control or Base Access (those are for access onto the main base). However - your vehicle is subject to all the rules and regulations of Ft Hood. Here are a few key items to remember:

Your vehicle is subject to search by Military Police, Base Security and Game Wardens. Your vehicle needs to have proof of liability insurance. This will be requested if you encounter any law enforcement.

All vehicle occupants need to have valid identification. A valid Drivers License, Military ID or Passport is preferred. A state issued ID (including student IDs) that include a photo will likely do.

Speed Limits on Ft Hood are STRICTLY ENFORCED. This is for your safety. Ft Hood is used by the Texas Cattleman's Association and there are cattle, deer and goats everywhere. They will just wander onto the road. If you hit any cattle - you are likely to total your vehicle, could be injured and will spend about 2 hours filling out the forms and documentation required by MPs, Game Wardens, the cattle owner, and his insurance company. Just don't speed - its not worth the 2 minutes you might save.

Use of cell phones is restricted on base to hands-free devices only. If you do not have hands-free capabilities - please pull over.

NO WEAPONS! CHL carriers - leave your weapons at home. Make sure that you and all of your vehicle's occupants are aware that there are no weapons allowed in POVs. If you are operating the vehicle - you are accountable first.

Remember that any violation on Ft Hood is a Federal matter - it is far more complex than a traffic ticket in your home town. Since 9/11 and then the shooting on Ft Hood - this base has been on high alert. It is a privelidge to be on base - let's all show appreciation for the privelidge.

Clarification on the POV passes. You will not enter through the Main Gate in Killeen. They are not set up there to issue your POV Pass.

You will need to enter North Gate through Gatesville and proceed directly to the AO/TA50. You will be issued your pass there.

Ft Hood is not the place to go exploring. Do not deviate from West Range Road.

Directions to the AO.

It is very important that you access the Bulldog AO (Ft Hood MOUT sites) through the North Gate outside Gatesville, TX. Going through the Main Gate in Killeen will require you to go through the checkpoint at the Main Gate and get a base pass. OLC has not made arrangements for anyone to get a pass through the Main Gate and access through the central area of Ft Hood.

From Austin, Dallas, Houston or San Antonio - travel to I35 in Temple. Take Hwy 36 N for approximately 30 miles. You will begin to see the National Guard vehicles on your left. Turn left onto 28th St (if you cross the Leon River you missed your turn). 28th St becomes West Range Rd. Travel 13.3 miles on West Range Rd and you will be at the AO.

From points West (through Brownwood, Comanche, etc...). Travel to Gatesville. Take Hwy 36 S. 3.5 miles past the WalMart - you will turn right onto 28th St. 28th St becomes West Range Rd. Travel 13.3 miles on West Range Rd and you will be at the AO.

Since I'm assuming the OP will be at the MOUT Sites, will the personnel at Ft. Hood know that an OLCMSS event will be taking place and that we will be having our airsoft replicas in our vehicle? Is the chrono going to be at the MOUT site? I just need a little more clarification, but other than that what you have provided is golden and thank you for it.

Post has asked for those that do not have a DOD Decal or Military ID to use the Gatesville (North Fort Hood) entrance. They are tracking the event.

TA50 (across the street from the MOUT site) will be the staging/camping area for the event. Check-in and chrono will be located there and staff will be on hand to direct you to the right location.

If this is your first time at Bulldog, just drive down West Range Road (while following the posted speed limits). After about 15 minutes you will begin to see a few large clusters of buildings on your left hand side, assuming you are southbound and coming from Gatesville. TA50 will be on your right hand side as you approach the last cluster of buildings.

Dark Paladin is exactly right.

Most players who aren't camping will stay in Gatesville. Head S on Hwy 36, then look for W Range Rd, also listed as 28th St on Google Maps.

Head west. West Range rd then turns to head SOUTH.

You can't miss the MOUT sites on your left hand (EAST) side of the road.

Registration, camping and chrono will be in the open area just WEST of the MOUT sites.

Is it possible for us to arrive at the AO from the south going north-bound on West Range Road or will we have to make a detour in order to not deviate from the directions you guys' supplied?

EDIT: Specifically coming from this address: 2401 Florence Rd, Killeen, TX 76542

South end of West Range Road terminates within Ft Hood proper, so no you will not be able to go north-bound on West Range Road.
